Coolly contemporary, it features a cutting edge black carbon fiber case for a fashionable look, which also helps to bring the weight down to 4 pounds. (Carbon fiber, the same material used on jets and sports cars to keep them lightweight yet sturdy, is much stronger than the magnesium used on standard notebooks.) Sony's VAIO SZ notebooks also take security seriously, employing a biometric fingerprint sensor and proprietary hard disk drive protection software to ensure your data is protected from unauthorized use as well as accidental damage. It also stores passwords to secure web sites you visit, so authentication and access are quick and easy--you only need your fingerprint. This VAIO SZ notebook features Sony's Hybrid Graphics System lets toggle between internal and external graphics chips, enabling you to choose lighter battery consumption or better performance depending on the situation. It's powered by the 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor, which offers a top-of-the-line 800 MHz front-side bus speed and 6 MB L2 cache. Part of Intel's 45-nanometer (nm) Penryn series, this processor boosts speed, reduces power requirements, and saves on battery life. The Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance. With the integrated wireless WAN, you can access the national Sprint Mobile Broadband service (subscription required) to extend your wireless coverage beyond LAN access networks and hotspots, giving you the freedom to go farther, do more, and stay connected. It also features a 250 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (maximizing capacity), quad-mode Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g/n), dual-layer DVD±RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard slot, Bluetooth connectivity, Gigabit Ethernet, and a Webcam integrated into the LCD's bezel, enabling easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats. This laptop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Business, which has a new user interface, named Windows Aero, that makes it easy to navigate through the operating system and from application to application. For instance, Windows Aero helps you juggle multiple tasks at once by providing a three-dimensional, real-time, animated view of all your open applications and documents. Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics

This notebook uses Sony's exclusive Hybrid Graphics System, which lets you set your graphics performance with a simple flick of a switch, enabling you to toggle between an internal graphics chip for optimal power consumption with excellent performance or an external graphics chip for even more robust performance. You can choose either the integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (with up to 358 MB of dynamically shared video RAM) or the installed Nvidia GeForce Go 8400M GS graphics card (with up to 1348 MB of shared video RAM). ![]() Rating: - Not a very good productI've had this product for nearly a year. It's a piece of junk in many respects. It looks nice and has a nice screen, but here are my major problems: 1) Battery life is terrible. I got 1h15m on an airplane watching videos stored on the hard drive, in "Stamina" mode. I get maybe 15-30 minutes more when I'm just browsing the internet over the wi-fi at home. It's not much better than the cheapo Averatec this laptop replaced. 2) Construction is poor. The case is pulling away from the keyboard on the side. It feels relatively flimsy. 3) It's veeeerrrryyy slow, particularly booting up and launching some applications. This is probably both Sony's and Microsoft's faults. I have 2GB ram and did the downgrade to XP, but there still seems to be so much junk/crapware. I tried taking some of it off which caused problems (like the Intel wi-fi software, I'll just use windows thank you, but when I did that the wi-fi didn't work at all). So I'm hesitant to do much more housekeeping. I'm running Startup Cop but that doesn't seem to help a whole lot. 4) Lack of physical volume control kind of stinks, but I guess I could have figured that out going in. I need to call Sony and see if they can somehow rectify the battery issue, but this is likely my (first and) last purchase of a Vaio laptop, even though I love many of Sony's other products. Rating: - VAIO SZ750NI found this notebook an execelent choice even before actualy purchasing it. After I started using it my opinion got even better. A real rocket. My only dispointment is the complete impossibility to unlock the WAN network from SPRINT. I took it back to my home country and can not subscribe to a local Cell Phone company data plan without having to use an external modem. Rating: - Nice Lappy! But.....Great laptop! Fast proc, nice Keyboard layout, brilliant screen, great wifi wwan ability, 4lb for a lappy that sports a centrino 2 proc and dvdrw. The bad side? Well the battery has leakage issues, the screen has to be handle with two hands or you risk cracking it. The right shift key placement should be better, I don't mind a smaller arrow key as I sometimes hit the up arrow and miss the shift key altogether. Vista.... I guess I don't need to say too much about this bloated OS system. But my biggest concern is the CRAPWARE! so much stuff that it took a whole day to figure out which needed to be removed and which didn't. In the end I removed everything and reinstalled just the event driver and the webcam drivers and cut my processes in vista from 87 (that's right!) to about 65. Now with 4gb it runs amazing. Best laptop for this size and price. Hardware wise it's on par or even better than a macbook pro which I own for the price except for the fact that it has vista installed, I would rate this better than a macbook pro! Yes I said it! Rating: - nice hardware, useless OS and crap wareIt is really a shame that such a nice laptop is ruined by Sony's crapware. The first boot experience is the most unpleasant I have had to date. All these trial packages (AOL, McAffee, Sprint WAN and other useless crap) completely ruin the user experience. Just for this reason I would not buy this product. If any of you decide to buy it, do yourselves a favor and format the hard drive and install everything yourselves. Make sure you don't pay the microsoft tax though. Rating: - GreatI think Sony Vaio are the best notebooks on market. I have chosen SZ because of it's power and mobility. It's great. The only thing I don't feel good about is speed of the hard drive. Well, I was using desktop with Raid 0 before so 5400rpm drive may seem slow :). It's not a bug, it's a feature :). |
